Listening to Our Body: Understanding the Signals It Sends Us

Our body has a memory which is at its centre our nervous system, a dynamic storage system for our memories.. When we experience all the highs and lows of life, we may never know how we process and repress what we feel over time. Even when we push through or bottle it up somehow, someway our body will try and find a way to release (we all know its possible to overwhelm with feelings). We become reactors and not responders to a flow state of emergency within. Most of the time we are not prepared for what we experience and so that unawareness becomes either a wake up or warning for us to respond. Our response could just be to take a walk, meditate, breathe, go for a jog, have an early night, anything that is right at that time.

Our thoughts could signal angry, sad, fear, jealousy, sometimes they create conflict to who we think we are. Our truth, what we know, and the alignment to what we’re living. Our bodies can trigger symptons as physical ailments. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), meridians are a network of invisible pathways through which vital energy, known as qi (pronounced "chee"), flows throughout the body. They are considered the energetic equivalent of a circulatory system, connecting organs, tissues, and every cell to maintain physical, mental, and emotional balance.

Once we have connected again to our bodies and listened to what is happening we can begin the journey back to a flow state by clearing the emotional blocks. One of the key stages here in my experience has been to distinguish which emotion is mine. Far too often we absorb or have our energy field emotions that are another persons. This is why we should also focus on how we may be sensitive to other peoples emotions/reactions. When we speak of that effect as a feeling it can often help create the required healthy boundary to allow us what our body is telling us it needs.

Eg. When you say this….it makes me feel this….

“Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.”

The Body Keeps The Score - Bessel A. van der Kolk

Both Co-Active coaching and my reiki energy healing sessions focus on connecting with, raising and then recognising our own experiences as feelings so they can be released. This is why many clients often feel lighter and or relieved after each session. It can take courage for us to allowing ourselves to know what we know.
